Reflection on Skills Earned through MAE 451
The concepts from this class that I learned that have impacted me the most are the decision making processes and strategies to determining customer needs. Techniques such as Pugh's analysis and QFD matrices I have actually used at my internship when working on projects to establish alternatives to currently used processes and tools. Using these techniques really helped me understand what the important aspects that a solution should encompass. With further practice using these techniques, I know that I will improve my skills in analysis and understanding the problem. Also of importance is learning how to fully understand what the problem is and why it is important to the user. Being able to constrain the problem appropriately by placing the correct conditions set by the customer and myself was an important skill I learned. Weighing different criteria based not only on what the engineering requirements are but also from what the customer really needs, was an essential skill that I learned to determine what a good design was versus a bad design. I believe that my skills with problem analysis and data analysis will help in designing new products as it will help me understand the problem background thoroughly
